Advising the DSPCA on its merger with the ISPCA Forming a national animal welfare charity for Ireland

News Charity and Not-for-Profit 11 Jun 2026

We recently advised long-standing client, the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA), on its merger with the Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) to create the new National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA).

The transfer brings together the reach, resources and expertise of Ireland’s two largest animal welfare charities to form a single, integrated national organisation: the NSPCA.

Through its enhanced resources, structures, facilities and expertise, the NSPCA is well positioned to deliver a coordinated national animal welfare strategy for Ireland. This new national capability will support the protection, rescue, rehabilitation and care of animals across the country.

Commenting on the transaction, Alice Murphy, Partner in our Charity Law & Not-for-Profit team at Mason Hayes & Curran, said:

“We are very pleased to have supported the DSPCA on this important transaction. A transfer of this scale required careful legal coordination and a strong focus on the organisations’ core shared charitable purpose: the prevention and relief of suffering of animals. The transfer has undoubtedly strengthened animal welfare services in Ireland. The NSPCA will provide a more coordinated national structure to support the protection and care of vulnerable animals across the country.”

Paul Connell, Chairperson of the NSPCA said:

“This merger represents an important step for animal welfare in Ireland. By bringing together the experience and expertise of the DSPCA and ISPCA, the National SPCA will be better placed to support animals and communities across the country. We are grateful to Alice Murphy and the Mason Hayes & Curran team for their thoughtful and practical guidance throughout this process.”

The transaction team was led by Alice Murphy and supported by Lydia Bentley, Oliver FitzGerald, Kate McDermott, Avril Daly and Caoilfhionn Sheil.
