Artificial Intelligence Annual Review 2024

Welcome to our Artificial Intelligence (AI) Review for 2024, and what a year it’s been! We’ve had the publication of the AI Act, the set up of the AI Office and the first substantial EU decision on the use of the text and data mining defence in the context of AI training. We’ve also had a raft of opinions and consultations on the intersection of AI and privacy law.
The big story of course is how the AI Act will be implemented. As we near the first deadline of 2 February 2025, all eyes are on the Commission to see what will be in its proposed guidelines for in and out of scope AI systems.
We are busy planning the role-out of our Article 4 AI Literacy training and pouring over the details of the second draft of the AI Office’s Code of Practice for general purpose AI models.
We expect 2025 will be dominated by high-risk AI system compliance planning and strategic launches of new GenAI models before 2 August. In the meantime, we take this opportunity to look back at the AI trends and themes that occupied our time in 2024. In particular, we focus on:
- AI in the workplace where our Employment Law and Benefits team detail their top tips for employers looking to enhance their HR practices by leveraging AI tools
- The EU’s refreshed Product Liability regime where our Products team give us the run down on what to expect from the Commission’s proposed reforms to adapt EU product liability rules for AI and the digital age
- Copyright in the AI landscape with our Intellectual Property Law team who examine the text and data mining exception in the recent German LAION decision
- How simple mistakes by chatbots can get you into hot water with customers!
