Wow Month: Eimear Cusack Fitness Tips

As part of our annual WOW Month, we hear from some of our colleagues on their top tips for fitness and wellbeing. This week, Eimear Cusack, Recruitment Manager, lets us into her world of yoga.

How did you get into yoga?

I started yoga about 15 years ago as the company I was working with offered classes on-site.

It took me a while to get that it isn’t about the exercise, it’s the relationship between the physical activity and the breath/awareness which brings about a sense of grounding I didn’t know I needed.

Before that, the stepper in the gym was my go-to as it burned maximum calories in a short time!

Since then, I trained to become a yoga teacher more to strengthen my own practice as you can only pick up so much in classes.

How does yoga help your wellbeing? / What do you feel are the benefits?

It gives me a sense of calm which I take from the mat into my day, it makes me a more measured person and my outlook more balanced.

It’s great for flexibility, strength and toning. Since classes are back in person, I love the social aspect of practicing as a group and tend to incorporate coffee or brunch after.

It has changed my attitude to exercise. High impact is no longer my default, I build-in walking, yoga, cycling into my daily routine so exercise isn’t something confined to the gym a couple of times a week, it’s a lifestyle.

Any tips for novices?

Sign up for a beginner’s course, see if you enjoy it. You will take something away from it from breathing exercises or stretches. If you can take in an outdoor class do, yoga and nature go hand in hand, it is one of life’s little pleasures!
