We asked June intern, Sinead Cronin, to share some advice for our future interns. Sinead is a third year Law and Business student at the University of Galway.
Plan ahead
Places in Mason Hayes & Curran's internship programme are competitive. Organisation is key when it comes to applying for internships. My advice would be instead of applying for multiple internships and submitting the same application over and over, do your research and choose the firms which represent you the most. By doing this you will be applying to firms that have similar values and morals as you do. Your application will stand out more when there is a positive connection between the applicant and the firm.
Planning ahead is essential for making the most of your internship. By setting clear goals, managing your time, prioritising tasks, preparing for meetings, anticipating challenges, balancing work and learning, you can maximize your internship experience.
Eat well
Starting an internship is exciting, but it can also be demanding. One crucial piece of advice for future interns is to prioritise eating well. Proper nutrition is key to maintaining energy, focus, and overall well-being. Eating a balanced diet rich in nutrients helps maintain your energy levels throughout the day. This allows you to stay focused and productive, making a positive impression. The firm has a subsidised cafe with delicious healthy meals and offers vegetarian options, making it a great spot to meet with fellow interns and enjoy a tasty lunch. Getting a free ice cream after lunch every day is something I am going to miss when the internship comes to an end!
Get plenty of rest
Your days can be pretty jam packed with numerous different talks, meetings and social outings taking place. It is important to get sufficient sleep each night to ensure you can preform to your full potential each day. Getting plenty of sleep is essential for your health, well-being and overall success during your internship here. By prioritising your rest, you can maximise your potential and make the most of your internship. Remember a well-rested intern is a productive, healthy and happy intern!
Keep up to date with commercial awareness developments
One crucial piece of advice for future interns is to maintain and enhance your commercial awareness throughout the three weeks. Understanding the broader business environment and its impact on legal practice is vital when working within a large corporate law firm. By following industry news such as the Financial Times and Irish Legal News, engaging with professional networks such as LinkedIn, and committing to continuous learning, you stay informed and provide valuable insights to your team. A commercially aware intern is a valuable asset to any legal team.
Trust the process and embrace the opportunity
Interning at a leading law firm can be daunting. Naturally, you'll want to put your best foot forward and make a strong first impression. However, it's important to trust the process and remember that everyone else is experiencing similar nerves and excitement. You're not alone on this journey.
The firm fosters a super friendly and supportive environment. Staff members are genuinely invested in your success and are committed to ensuring you have a smooth transition into the firm. They understand the challenges you face as an intern and are eager to provide the guidance and support you need.
Take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and experience around you. Ask questions, seek advice, and don't hesitate to step up to new tasks even if you feel unprepared. The support, encouragement, and guidance you receive will be invaluable in helping you grow and succeed in your role. Remember, every experience is a learning opportunity.
Embrace the challenges, trust the supportive environment, and make the most of your internship. You have the potential to thrive, and everyone here is there to help you along the way.
