This week in our MHC Life series, we speak to Eoin Flood, who works in our IT team. Eoin tells us about his career journey here, a typical day for him and an upcoming holiday!

Tell us a bit about you and your career journey to MHC – what inspired you to get into this career?

I am a relativity new worker to the working world and to the firm itself as I am just approaching 3 months here.

I always had an interest in technology whether it be at a young age helping the mother at home making sure the TV worked for the 6 o’clock news or messing around on the computer back in the day making word searches and printing them off.

Through my time in school, I started to look and take a bit of a more serious interest in working in I.T and decided to study I.T Management in IT Tallaght which I finished up not too long ago in 2020.

Favourite thing about your role?

I thrive working within a good healthy growing team and that is what I have in my role. At the firm, the team have been my favourite part of the role as they have allowed me to learn so much about I.T, which can’t be easy for them as I have asked probably a million questions by now!

For example, the lads showing me new ways of problem solving, allowing me to shadow them and in return then allowing me and trusting me to help them complete some of the day-to-day tasks. It has been a great confidence boost for me to feel a part of a team which I admire very highly.

My favourite part of the role has already allowed me to experience many different aspects in IT which I am keen to develop my skills such as security, networking and hardware.

Talk us through a typical day for you

A typical day for me Monday to Friday normally starts quite early, in my opinion. At aound 6am I am greeted by my dog ‘Rascal’ who wants to go outside. He can move a little slow in the morning but he’s 16 years of age, so I don’t mind.

Then it’s nothing exciting, I have a little breakfast and if the motivation is there, I’ll make lunch and most mornings I would cycle to the FlyFit gym in Portobello before work.

My working days start at 9am up until 5:30PM and within that timeframe I will work on internal staff’s needs for assistance and also work with the IT Team on some interesting projects within the firm. Once the day is over, I will cycle home and depending on the day do a driving lesson or head to Gaelic football training with my local club St. Jude’s.

What's your idea of a perfect holiday/favourite place you've ever visited?

Once there is sun and it is shining, it is always a good start. I enjoy swimming especially in the sea which can be tricky living in Ireland as the weather doesn’t always make it as enjoyable, so it is always great when aboard to be able enjoy a nice beach with some hot weather.

I don’t want to jinx it, but I have only ever travelled in Europe before, and I'm hoping that will change this July. I want to say my favourite place will be Mexico or New York when I travel with my girlfriend. It is teed up to be a great trip.

Favourite quote?

Always good to leave it on a quote. It may seem cringy but it also very true:

“The most precious resource we all have is time” — Steve Jobs
