In this edition of our MHC Life series, we speak to Darran Brennan, a Senior Associate from our Employment Law & Benefits team. Darran talks to us about his journey to Mason Hayes & Curran and famous encounters.

Tell us a bit about you and your career journey to MHC – what inspired you to get into this career?

I studied law and politics in university and have been passionate about both subjects ever since. I’ve been fortunate to have a varied career to date. I started my career in Ibec working in policy in Brussels and Dublin, then trained and practiced in another firm before being appointed a Special Adviser to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine in the previous government. I worked for Tirlán as Head of Governmental Affairs for the ‘Year of Elections 2024’ before joining the fantastic Employment and Benefits team at Mason Hayes & Curran. I believe there is an overlap between policy, government, and corporate legal advisory which helps us advise clients with a different perspective.

Career highlight?

Joining Mason Hayes & Curran, of course!

Talk us through a typical day for you

Working in the Employment and Benefits team gives me the opportunity to work on varied and interesting projects throughout the day and to work with a great group of people. No two days are the same and there is rarely a typical day.

If I wasn’t a solicitor I would be...

A farmer or a chef – I love all things agriculture and food.

What books have you read recently?

On the serious side, Mark Carney’s "Values" and on the fun side I’m reading Harry Potter to my kid for the first time.

One thing most people don’t know about you?

My family are sheep farmers, and we love collies. My wife and I have a prize-winning collie named Margo – we show her throughout Ireland.

Have you ever met anyone famous?

My idea of famous is probably not as glamorous as most people; I’ve been fortunate to meet with some fascinating global political leaders – but the most special political ‘leader’ I got to meet was Larry ‘the Prime Minister’s Cat’ during a meeting in No.10 Downing Street!

We’re currently recruiting for a wide range of positions, and there’s never been a better time to join us. Explore our current opportunities.
