MHC Intern Life: Isabelle Healy

For the next MHC Intern Life, we talked to Isabelle Healy, who studied Law in Trinity College Dublin. Isabelle tells us about her first impression of us, why she chose law and the department she’s currently working in during her internship.

What inspired you to choose law?

Throughout school I naturally gravitated towards humanities subjects, but after my Leaving Cert had no idea what I wanted to pursue. I was certain I wanted to do a degree that connected to a specific profession, which led me to law. A law degree offers so much variety and exposure to different subjects from commercial to philosophical, and I knew I would enjoy such a wide-ranging degree that had interesting opportunities at the end of it.

Where did you study and why?

I studied law in Trinity and really enjoyed my four years there. Being from Dublin, it always seemed like a natural choice, and I’ve always loved its beautiful architecture and central location. I knew I wanted to study in a university with opportunities to study abroad, which I did in my third year, and the opportunity to study in the centre of the city and be immersed in the city really appealed to me.

What department are you working with in MHC?

I’ve been placed in the Medical Law department for my internship. I was really eager to get some experience in a litigation department, and so far I’ve received a good insight into some of the work ongoing at the moment. I studied a module on medical law in my final year of university and it’s been incredibly interesting to move from that into seeing what a real practice is like and how it operates. The practice here is extremely large and the wide variety of work undertaken makes every day really interesting.

What is your favourite quote?

My favourite quote would have to be Alexander Graham Bell’s, “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” I think that when you take on completely new environments such as a law firm, it is important to remember that preparation and having a positive attitude are the most important things! Nobody expects you to know everything, but staying organised and open-minded go a long way towards having a great experience anywhere.

What was your first impression of MHC?

My first impression of the firm was extremely positive. Everyone at the firm is really friendly and welcomed us warmly to the internship. The trainees are always available to answer any questions and make us feel very at home in new surroundings. The medical law department is in the Warehouse, which has a smaller feel than the main building, and everyone who works in departments there really makes an effort to get to know the interns and explain some of what they do.
