For the next MHC Intern Life, we talked to Alanna Nic Ghiolla Phadraig who has just completed her final year of business and law in University College Dublin. She tells us about her second week as an intern here.

My second week here has been actioned packed. It was filled with talks, workshops, and exciting legal work with my department.

My week began with a team call on Monday morning. This was a great opportunity for me to hear what other team members were working on and to get a better understanding of the daily life on the Public Regulatory and Investigations team. Everyone was extremely welcoming and has given me the opportunity to get involved in some really exciting legal projects.

We had a talk from some trainees and newly qualified lawyers on Monday afternoon. They spoke to us about their respective departments, ranging from Financial Services to Medical Law. This was a great way for us to learn more about the broad variety of sectors the firm is involved in. It also gave us a chance to ask questions and to get a better insight into life as a trainee at the firm.

On Tuesday, I attended the Four Courts with an associate and a trainee from my department. This was an exciting experience and a great opportunity to see a case that I had heard about in action in front of the judge.

We were introduced to the Knowledge team in week 2. They prepared a session for us on legal research and writing, before giving us a case note assignment. Each intern has been allocated a case relevant to their specific department. This has been a task which has kept me busy during the week but has also helped me to greatly improve my legal writing skills.

We have been given the time to work on our group project this week. We have all enjoyed researching current and cutting-edge legal developments and look forward to presenting our findings to the partners next week. The broad variety of department work and intern specific tasks has been great as every day is busy and varied.

One of the highlights of the week was the CSR talk we received on Wednesday. This was given by different lawyers involved in a variety of diversity initiatives across the firm. It was exciting to hear about these projects and the opportunities that exist for everyone to get involved. Another standout from the week was a talk from the Managing Partner Will Carmody, and Partner Sarah Cloonan. They discussed their progression in their legal careers, and the many opportunities associated with life as a commercial lawyer.

Our second week in Mason, Hayes & Curran has come to an end with Partner Promotion drinks on Friday – an event highly anticipated by all of the interns! The week has been enjoyable, engaging, and has certainly flown by. I am really looking forward to everything that is planned for the third and final week of the Internship programme.
