Artificial intelligence has become increasingly present in our everyday lives, and its influence within the workplace continues to grow. Dispute Resolution Partner, Gearoid Carey, was recently interviewed on Newstalk by Josh Crosbie, as part of a piece which looked at the impact of AI on various professions. He shared his views on the use of AI in legal practice, from a disputes perspective especially, and what these technological developments mean for legal practitioners.

Gearoid previously shared his insights on the risks of using AI in legal submissions, noting the potential for inaccuracies in Beware of Use of AI in Legal Proceedings.

Recently, the Law Society of Ireland published guidance for solicitors on the ethical and responsible use of generative AI, outlining key risks, obligations, and the professional standards expected of those working in the legal sector using AI. That guidance underscores the importance of careful, informed use of AI, an approach emphasised by Gearoid in his interview.

Speaking alongside other professionals from different sectors including medicine and recruitment, Gearoid said,

"There are a number of constraints in terms of what lawyers can actually use it for. So, if you are using the free or enterprise models, they give rise to issues with confidentiality, disclosure and privilege as well ethical issues where you are putting materials before the court, in terms of potential inaccuracies."

He added,

"It also gives rise other professional obligations including the need to have professional competance and AI literacy as well as an obligation to ensure you supervise your staff."
