We asked Anais Kuss to share some advice for future interns. Anais is a law graduate from NUIG and she will be starting an International Business LLM at Trinity College Dublin in September.

The Environment

The firm offers a progressive and exciting environment that is unique to other firms. This is a rare opportunity that you should take advantage. It’s beneficial for you to make the most of your time here as you are exposed to a variety of people and are able to get a true insight to what the firm is all about.

Handling the Nerves

It may feel intimidating at first joining a leading law firm and not knowing what to expect. Naturally, you’ll want to put your best foot forward and make a good impression. Just remember that you’re in the same boat as everyone else and everyone is eager and excited to get started. Trust in your ability. The firm is an amazing environment to initiate your legal development and future careers.

The firm have avenues everywhere you look for a well-rounded learning experience. They offer extensive library and research resources that are readily at hand, so don’t be afraid to avail of it whenever you can! Upon entering the firm, you will quickly realise the benefit and emphasis on colleague accessibility. The open plan workspace promotes endless opportunities to learn from top professionals around you, so don’t be shy, introduce yourself and ask questions.

Assessing Your Capacity

It is very important to communicate and be honest about your availability. Quickly, you realise that you have to balance between the department and intern work. It is an exciting atmosphere and although you may want to take on as much as possible, you want to make sure you can meet deadlines and expectations.

Getting To Know Your Team

On the first day you will be introduced to your mentors and people in your department. From the get-go everyone is welcoming and encouraging, an atmosphere that is a common theme here. As you familiarise yourself with your department, along with the others, you will have many opportunities to get to know fellow interns. Throughout the schedule, you will attend social events specifically for interns but also firm functions, so make sure you get to know your colleagues!
