Stephen Gillick


Stephen is a Partner and Head of Pensions in our Employment Law and Benefits team.

He has extensive experience in advising trustees, sponsoring employers and pension providers on a range of issues, including pension scheme establishment and restructuring; pension scheme funding and exercises to reduce scheme liabilities.

Stephen is experienced in drafting and updating pension scheme documentation and advising on pension scheme mergers and reorganisations. He regularly advises on the pension aspects of corporate acquisitions and disposals.

Stephen also provides guidance to trustees and sponsoring employers on compliance and interpretation of pensions legislation and scheme rules.

Representative Matters

  • Advising a large US multi-national on the closure of its Irish defined benefit scheme and the implementation of a guarantee in favour of the scheme trustees from the US parent.

  • Advising the trustees of a large defined benefit pension scheme on the implementation of an enhanced transfer value exercise for the scheme.

  • Advising a large multinational employer on the actions required to close its defined benefit pension schemes to the future accrual of benefits and assisting in the establishment of replacement pension schemes.

Speaking Engagements & Teaching

Stephen presents regularly at events hosted by the Irish Association of Pension Funds (IAPF) and the Irish Institute of Pensions Management (IIPM). He has presented on pensions issues at international events such as the International Pensions and Employment Benefits Lawyers Association (IPEBLA) annual conference. 

Stephen is the Chairman of the Pensions Law Committee of the Law Society of Ireland and lectures on its Certificate on Pensions Law and Applied Trusteeship. Stephen is also the internal examiner for that course.


Stephen is a regular contributor to the IAPF online pensions magazine and was responsible for drafting the pensions content for the Law Society of Ireland’s professional practice guide for employment law.
