Introduce yourself
I recently completed the final year of my Law Plus degree at the University of Limerick (UL). I am looking forward to graduating in August. During my time at UL, I undertook a number of leadership roles, such as Class Representative. I was actively involved in several societies, including the Law Society and the Photography Society. I am currently preparing to begin my Master’s in September and sit the FE-1s in October.
What inspired you to choose law?
I chose to study law because I enjoy analysing complex problems and working in client-facing environments. What attracted me most to the profession was the combination of critical thinking and practical impact.
The role of a lawyer, in particular, offers the opportunity to keep learning while working in a fast-paced environment. I felt that the breadth of work undertaken by law firms would allow me to develop skills that are valuable across a wide range of industries and practice areas.
What team are you working with at Mason Hayes & Curran?
I was assigned to the Corporate team for the three weeks.
Within every team, interns are assigned three mentors, typically consisting of one trainee, one associate and one senior associate/partner. They are responsible for overseeing the work and providing feedback and guidance.
I was given the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks, including a research assignment, drafting reports, preparing a case note and contributing to the intern project.
What is your favourite quote?
“How can a person know everything at 18, but nothing at 22?” - Nothing New, Taylor Swift.
It accurately sums up how most law students feel navigating post-graduation and the FE1s.
How has your experience been?
The first week at the firm was busy and exciting. Every day was full of meeting new people and attending presentations.
When going into an internship, it can be quite daunting as you never really know what you’ll be faced with. So, I was delighted to see that the firm had planned a detailed schedule for us, outlining the different projects and tasks.
I have also received a lot of support from my mentors to help me settle in and they were always available to answer any questions. Everyone, regardless of how busy they are, has gone out of their way to ensure that all the interns feel welcome. It’s honestly a really friendly firm.
