Tips for Future Interns Hear from Orla Breathnach

Insights Graduates 07 Jun 2026

We asked our June intern, Orla Breathnach to share some advice for our future interns.

Application process

Internship application deadlines tend to come up quite quickly! My advice would be to apply as early as possible to give yourself all the time you need to avoid rushing through the process. Showcasing any particular interest and the research you have done on the firm will also help your application stand out.

Asking a friend, particularly someone who has been through the application process, to read over your work may help spot any potential mistakes. Most importantly, be yourself and try to display your personality through the application.

Take notes

The first few days of the internship can sometimes be daunting as you are adjusting to the new environment. During the informative talks scheduled, my advice is to take note of any important details, such as resource tools, deadlines, contact information and even where certain departments are located! This can help throughout the internship, in particular with the research tasks given.

Ask questions

Everyone in the firm is very welcoming and happy to help. If you are uncertain about a particular topic or task it is best to reach out and clarify. Having a clear understanding of the tasks given will improve the quality of your work. The open-plan space in the office provides invaluable learning opportunities, allowing you to easily interact and engage with your mentor and partners. Taking advantage of the knowledge and experience that surrounds you will assist you throughout the internship and the advice that the solicitors have to offer will help you with your future legal career.

Research the department

Prior to starting the internship, you will be told the department in which you will be working and who your buddy and mentors are. If placed in a department you are unfamiliar with, it can be helpful to have a foundational understanding of the work that is done, the key clients and any current news within that sector. Making use of the firm’s website or LinkedIn page can be a great place to start looking. This will help you during your first week in the department and with any tasks you're given.

Immerse yourself in the experience

Lastly, make the most of the internship! The firm organises enjoyable social events for you and your fellow interns, including escape rooms, dinner events and quizzes. Full participation in these events allows you to get to know your intern group and make the experience more enjoyable. Don’t shy away from tasks that seem challenging or daunting, it is likely that you are well able for it. The internship will pass quickly, so embrace every opportunity and make the most of your time with the firm.
