MHC Life: Emily O'Connell A week in the life of an intern

Insights Graduates 11 Jun 2026

We talked to Emily O'Connell. Emily is a third-year Single Honours Law student at Trinity College Dublin. She describes her first week as an intern here.

Our first week as interns began on a Tuesday following the June bank holiday. The internship began with a series of introductions and icebreakers, where we got to know the other interns as well as our lead mentors and support mentors from our allocated department. I had a great time getting to know everyone and soon settled in to the firm.

Following the icebreaker session we began a series of trainings and induction sessions to become familiar with the different practice areas and policies of the firm. It was very helpful and informative.

In the afternoon we had the opportunity to have lunch with our 'buddies' who are trainee solicitors at Mason Hayes & Curran. It was lovely getting to know my 'buddy' Emma Kate as well as the other trainee solicitors from other departments. It was really inspiring to hear fun stories and experiences the trainees have had so far within the firm as well as the support and guidance they have received in their legal journeys thus far.

Following a quick lunchtime walk (and a free ice cream!) we got set up at our desks and got to know our team within our allocated department. It was great meeting everyone within the tax department and getting to know the day-to-day activities of the department before our first day came to an end.

On Wednesday morning we received our project details and teams. The project titles were very interesting and we were excited to get started. Following a library training session and an allocated project discussion we had a series of department briefings from newly qualified solicitors. It was insightful to learn about the different departments and what a trainee solicitor might expect when working within these areas. One such department that I found particularly interesting was the corporate department and the large transactions that they deal with.

Later that afternoon we all went to GoQuest. We were split into randomly allocated teams and we had a great time solving puzzles and completing games whilst competing against the other teams. It was a fantastic way to get to know each other and have lots of fun at the same time. We then returned to the office before heading to Paulie's Pizza for a delicious dinner and drinks which everyone greatly enjoyed.

Thursday morning began with some work within our departments where we received our case notes. Following lunch and a rainy walk we got settled back at our desk for an afternoon of department work. I assisted my "buddy" in a matter by carrying out some research into tax incentives for a company looking to set up in Ireland. Finally before wrapping up for the day I drafted an email for my mentor before sending it out to the tax department.

Even in these first few days, I have learnt so much not only about the firm itself but also about the lovely and friendly people that make the firm so welcoming. I’m really looking forward to the next two weeks where I hope to learn lots and most importantly have fun.
