For the next MHC Intern Life in our new series, we talked to Oisín O'Driscoll, an intern in our July intake. Oisín is a graduate of Law and French in Trinity College Dublin and is currently completing his Master of Laws at Trinity too. We asked him to describe his second week as an intern here.
During my second week as an intern at Mason Hayes & Curran I had the opportunity to really get stuck into the legal and research tasks I was assigned by my department. As an intern on the Real Estate team, I was fortunate enough to work on research and drafting material to support large and current commercial transactions.
On Monday morning, we met with the firm’s Knowledge Team and were assigned the task of drafting a case note relevant to our specific departments. Ireland was experiencing record high summer temperatures, so the firm decided to give everyone free ice-cream as a way to keep cool. We enjoyed them over lunch on the terrace, while admiring the views from the office of the Aviva Stadium and Dublin Bay. Afterwards, I worked with my mentor and senior associate on departmental work which involved analysing and drafting documents relating to real estate transactions.
On Tuesday, we worked on our presentation for our group projects. I found it easy to get working with my group, following the team bonding events that were scheduled for us during our first week such as our trip to GoQuest and my departmental hike along the Tibradden Mountain Trail, I felt that I had built a great relationship with the fellow interns.
A lunch was organised for us with trainees from different departments of the firm. This gave us an insight into what life as a trainee here might look like as the trainees talked us through the traineeship process and answered questions we had regarding the programme. I found this talk to be incredibly interesting as it demonstrated the interesting and dynamic work that trainees engage with across the various departments of the firm. In the afternoon, I headed out of the office to another Dublin law firm to assist in the inspection of documents relating to a transaction my team was executing. I found this to be incredibly interesting as I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to engage in such hands-on work in a three-week internship!
On Wednesday, we had a lunchtime briefing from some of the firm's solicitors from different departments. They touched on their experience qualifying and how they specialised in their specific areas of law. I found the lunchtime sessions to be beneficial as it provided us with useful information for our future careers (the free lunch is also a plus too!).
On Thursday, the trainees organised a quiz for us. With a €100 Milano’s voucher at stake – competition was fierce. My team could have done with some brushing up on our general knowledge beforehand as we didn’t even come close to winning – but we managed to soften the loss with some after work pints!
My second week as an intern with Mason Hayes and Curran has absolutely flown by and truly been a great experience. I am really looking forward to starting our final week and getting the opportunity to present our group work on front of the partners before finishing up!
