Susan is a Partner in the Litigation Department specialising in Construction Law. Susan advises clients on all issues, both contentious and non-contentious, arising on construction and engineering projects. Susan’s particular expertise lies in dispute resolution. She has acted in a wide range of construction and engineering related claims. Susan takes a practical approach to such disputes and strongly promotes early resolution of claims where appropriate. Susan advises the education sector in relation to building projects and acts for the education management organisations as well as a large number of individual education institutions at primary, secondary and third level. Susan is on the panel of advisors to members of the Construction Industry Federation and is also on the panels of a number of large insurance companies advising in relation to professional indemnity claims in construction projects.
Involvement in the Construction Industry
Susan is actively involved in the Irish Construction Industry. She is the chairperson of NAWIC Ireland and the regional co-ordinator for Ireland of the Society of Construction Law. NAWIC and SCL are both large international organisations bringing together people from the various different professions in the construction industry including lawyers, engineers, architects, quantity surveyors and project managers.
Acting for the contractor, employer and developer in a dispute involving major structural defects arising from the use of defective building materials during construction. Handling all aspects of the claim from availability of insurance cover to managing claims by homeowners and progressing claims against sub-contractors and suppliers;
Appointed by large insurance company to represent its client in a professional indemnity dispute arising from a major building project where its client acted in the role of PSDP;
Advising education institution in relation to procurement issues on a major new school building project;
Acting for second level college in proceedings against design team and contractor for defective works and design of a new sports hall which required complete demolition and re-building;
Representing publican client in enforcement proceedings taken by Dublin City Council in relation to compliance with building regulations and issuing proceedings against design team in respect of those issues;
Advising client affected by a railway order in relation to issues of “planning blight” affecting a development site; and
Acting for a parish client in relation to a dispute with neighbouring landowners in relation to subsidence of properties built on a defectively constructed embankment.
Susan regularly speaks at Construction Industry events and seminars and is praised for her practical and straight talking approach. Susan runs in house seminars for clients on relevant and topical construction law issues. As part of her roles in NAWIC and SCL Susan organises regular events for those working in the construction industry including engineering and legal education events and site visits to major construction projects. Susan regularly attends SCL and NAWIC conferences and events in the UK.
