John Gulliver, Principal
Head of Tax
For more than 20 years, John has advised some of the largest Irish, UK and US groups on the tax structuring of their operations. His clients have included some of the largest enterprises in Ireland and numerous Irish based real estate syndicates with substantial prime commercial properties located in Ireland and the UK. He regularly works with US, UK and other foreign tax counsel on behalf of Irish based clients. He has advised on numerous inward investment projects and merger and acquisition transactions.
His experience includes advising numerous multi-national enterprises on using the Irish corporate tax regime to build out their EMEA and world footprint. He has particular expertise in structuring the acquisition of intellectual property hubs using Irish cross-border corporates.
John was listed as one of Ireland’s leading tax practitioners in Legal Business’ European Legal Experts publication in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Before joining Mason Hayes+Curran, John was a founding partner in another leading Irish legal firm’s tax advisory practice.
Recent Transactions:
- Acted as Irish tax counsel to Berkshire Partners LLC, Advent International Corporation and Bain Capital Partners LLC in their recommended $1.2 billion acquisition by way of scheme of arrangement for Skillsoft plc.
- Acted as sole Irish tax counsel for UK quoted Vedanta Resources plc in connection with its acquisition of zinc mining interests in Ireland as part of its agreement with Anglo American plc to purchase African and Irish zinc mining interests for $1.34 billion.
- Acted as Irish tax counsel to Mylan Inc., which ranks among the leading generic and specialty pharmaceutical companies in the world, in respect of its $550 million cash acquisition of Bioniche Pharma Holdings Ltd., an Irish based global distributor of generic injectable drugs.
- Acted as Irish tax counsel to LaCrosse in respect of its acquisition from Bank of America Merill Lynch’s global alternative fund administration business that will increase the group’s funds under administration from $15 billion to $21 billion.
