Weavering Case Seminar

Mason Hayes & Curran hosted a legal briefing on the highly topical issue of the Weavering case on Thursday 19th January 2012. Our guest speaker from Jones Day, London, is currently acting in the related on-going litigation in the English High Court.

What are the implications for Irish funds and directors?

In the Weavering case, a Cayman Islands court recently gave judgement against two independent directors of a hedge fund, managed by Weavering Capital (UK) Ltd for $111m each for "willful neglect or default of duty".  The briefing explored the implications of the Weavering case for Irish funds and directors as well as the background to the case and related news and litigation.

Barnaby Stueck, Partner, Jones Day London
Barnaby Stueck is currently acting for the litigators of Weavering Capital (UK) Limited, the London based manager, in relation to its proceedings against the perpetrators of the alleged fraud on Weavering's investors. His practice is concentrated on multi jurisdictional commercial litigation and arbitration, with particular emphasis on complex fraud, contentious insolvency, and financial services.

David O'Donnell, Partner & Head of Corporate, Mason Hayes & Curran
David practices in the areas of securities law, mergers and acquisitions, corporate structuring and corporate finance and has been involved in some of the largest deals involving Irish companies in recent years.  He regularly advises upon directors' duties in a wide variety of contentious and non-contentious scenarios and has himself served as director of numerous Irish companies.

Mark Browne, Partner, Investment Funds, Mason Hayes & Curran
Mark is a Partner in the Financial Services Department specialising in investment funds.  Mark has over 10 years' experience in the funds industry and advises on all aspects of the structuring, establishment and ongoing operation of investment funds in Ireland, as well as in regard to issues affecting service providers and the directors of corporate investment funds. Mark previously practised as an Attorney-at-Law in the Cayman Islands specialising in hedge funds for a number of years.

Melanie Crowley, Partner, Employment, Mason Hayes & Curran
Melanie is involved in all aspects of contentious and non-contentious employment law on both the employer and employee side. Melanie is regularly involved in employment related civil actions including injunctions, actions for breach of contract, employer liability claims and personal injury actions for stress and bullying.  She regularly appears before High and Circuit Courts and the Employment Appeals Tribunal.
