Cloud Computing Breakfast Briefing

Mason Hayes & Curran were delighted to host a breakfast briefing on Wednesday 25th February in their offices in association with the Irish Software Association.

The topic of the briefing was “Cloud Computing - the reality of doing business in the cloud”.

The speakers were Joe Drumgoole, CEO and Founder of Putplace Limited and Philip Nolan, Partner at Mason Hayes & Curran. The Chairperson for the event was Pat Brazel, Chairman of the Irish Software Association and Chairman of Polarlake.

Cloud computing has generated quite a buzz in IT circles and beyond over the past year and the event was well attended. Topics included the growth of cloud-based services now available, both in terms of range of services and their viability, and the promise of reduced costs, both of which are leading many businesses to consider a move towards the cloud to meet their IT needs or to deliver services to their customers.

A number of issues were touched upon, including:

  • a clear explanation of the main technical aspects of the cloud computing;
  • a presentation of the real business pros and cons of cloud computing;
  • an insider's view on the opportunities and challenges presented by cloud computing;
  • a review of the legal, regulatory and contractual issues surrounding cloud computing;
  • practical advice on how to structure contracts involving cloud-based services, from the perspective of cloud-providers, end-user service providers and cloud-services users.

The briefing concluded with an interactive Q&A session during which the speakers addressed the concerns and questions of the attendees on a range of technical and legal issues.
