International Maritime Law Conventions - have we reached the end of the road?
On Wednesday, 3 October, Mason Hayes & Curran played host to the Autumn lecture of the Irish Maritime Law Association.
Patrick Griggs, CBE, one of the world's foremost authorities on maritime legislative matters, gave an illuminating speech on the many obstacles that increasingly threaten the harmonisation of international maritime law. Based on his significant involvement with the CMI, IMO and other intergovernmental organisations over the past 30 years and illustrating his point with many real examples, Patrick proved to be a most interesting speaker and went on to answer many questions put forward by the members of the Irish Maritime Law Association (IMLA).

The IMLA is the foremost group of individuals and organisations with interests in the legislative and regulatory aspects of the Irish maritime industry. Membership is drawn from across the shipping, insurance and legal sectors, with regular meetings held in order to discuss matters of general shipping interest and to provide a forum for the review of legislation in relation to maritime matters. The association aims to promote a better understanding of Irish maritime law and to encourage its unification on an international level.
