Following the success of previous Mock Employment Appeals Tribunals, Mason Hayes & Curran staged a Mock Equality Hearing in the Four Seasons Hotel on 17 October, 2006.
The event was attended by interested HR professionals and business persons who might otherwise be unaware of how an Equality Hearing works.
The scenario was written by Mason Hayes & Curran's lawyers, outlining the case of a foreign national who claimed that they had been dismissed from their workplace on the grounds of Equality and Race. An initial Equality Hearing had heard in favour of the employer and this was subsequently under appeal with the Labour Court.
The Mock Equality Hearing was designed to act out how this appeal process would be conducted in the Labour Court. The event was added to with Mr Kevin Duffy, chairman of the Labour Court taking part, along with high profile Irish barristers acting on behalf of both the claimant and the respondent. At the end of the proceedings the audience had the opportunity to vote on the outcome that they thought should take place.
The culmination of the proceedings allowed attendees to enjoy a glass of wine and canapés, whilst having the opportunity to review various aspects of the case with the cast members.
