Mason Hayes & Curran Donate Computers to Camara

19 December 2011

Mason Hayes & Curran recently donated 151 of our PCs for reuse in schools in Ireland, Jamaica and East Africa. Some members of our Corporate Social Responsibility Committee paid a visit to Camara to find out more about what happens to the equipment that we donate for reuse in education.

Camara is an Irish charity that takes in used computers from individuals and companies and refurbishes them for reuse in schools that otherwise would have no access to such technology. It also provides training for teachers to ensure that they can make best use of the educational software that Camara loads onto the refurbished computers.

The word Camara is West African and means “one who teaches with experience”.  The charity is driven by the beliefs that:

  • Education is key for people to break the cycle of poverty they find themselves in.
  • When properly used, Information and Communication Technologies can be harnessed to revolutionise the way world-class education is delivered to disadvantaged communities.

The team in Camara explained to our CSR Committee that each computer given to them will benefit 19 children over a 5 year life span.  On that basis, the 151 PCs we have given to Camara are expected to benefit 2,869 students.
