This morning the Minister for Health published the legislation which is designed to give effect to her policy on the funding of nursing home care.
Running to 46 sections, the Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008 is a relatively lengthy Bill which is designed to give effect to the policy proposals contained in "A Fair Deal: The Nursing Home Care Support Scheme" which was first announced in December 2006.
The proposed scheme has attracted some controversy as it is designed to ensure that persons who avail of long term residential care, and who do not have adequate financial resources, will have the cost of their care recouped from their estate after their death.
The publication of the Bill had been delayed so as to afford additional time for the concerns of the Attorney General to be addressed. It is intended that the Scheme will be put into effect during 2009.
