TG4 to become an independent body

The Minister for Communications, Marine & Natural Resources Noel Dempsey T.D., announced on 17 August 2006 that the Irish language television station TG, will become an independent station.

The station, which currently operates under the umbrella of RTÉ, will be transformed into an independent statutory body from the beginning of April in 2007.

The Broadcasting Act 2001 provides the statutory basis for the separation.

The Minister announced that he will establish a Project Management Group (“PMG”) as soon as possible to oversee the establishment of TG4 as an independent body. The PMG will be chaired by officials from the Department of Communications, Marine & Natural Resources and will also comprise of representatives from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, RTÉ and TG4.

According to the Minister, TG4 will continue to receive grant aid from the exchequer to fund its operations in 2007, along with income TG4 receives from advertising.
