European Commission consultation process on WEEE Directive now open

28 June 2006

Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) was introduced by the European Commission in order to regulate the management of what is becoming an increasingly voluminous source of waste in Europe.

***CONSULTATION PERIOD NOW CLOSED***

Dr Brian HuntA full review of this Directive and its objectives is planned for the year 2008.  However, in advance of a full review, the Commission Services has now launched a public information gathering process which will continue until 11 August 2006.

Member States, competent authorities, collection schemes, industry, NGO’s and other stakeholders involved in the review process are invited to make their comments.

The Directive’s main objective is to introduce measures to increase the amount of electrical goods that can be re-cycled.

The WEEE Directive has been transposed into Irish law by the WEEE Regulations S.I. No. 340 of 2005 and these regulations may be cited as the Waste Management (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Regulations 2005.

In Ireland, the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) and local authorities are responsible for the enforcement of the WEEE Regulations.

During the consultation process, Mason Hayes & Curran can prepare submissions to the Commission Services on behalf of clients. In addition to proposing changes to the WEEE regime in outline terms, our submissions can include draft amendments to the existing legislation.

If you would like Mason Hayes & Curran to formulate a submission in relation to the consultation process, please contact Dr Brian Hunt, Head of Public Affairs.
