Views invited on inaccessible legislation

30 May 2006

The Taoiseach has announced a new initiative which is aimed at making legislation more accessible for everyone.

***CONSULTATION PERIOD NOW CLOSED***

Dr Brian HuntAs part of this initiative, the Law Reform Commission has been conferred with responsibility for restating several areas of statute law.  In plain terms, this means that the Law Reform Commission will be gathering together several pieces of legislation on a related topic and will then publish it as a stand-alone document which reflects the up-to-date position of the statute law on that particular topic.

Before embarking on the process, the Law Reform Commission are now inviting views on which legislation is a priority for restatement.

It is likely that priority will be afforded to legislation which impacts on business, as well as legislation which impacts on citizens.  Acts which have been amended on multiple occasions are also expected to be afforded priority.

The legislation will be restated in accordance with the terms of the Statute Law (Restatement) Act 2002 and the restatement project is part of the Better Regulation agenda.

Dr Brian Hunt, head of public affairs at Mason Hayes & Curran is very familiar with the statute law restatement process and how it has the potential to ease clients’ understanding of the regulatory framework within which they operate.

During the consultation process, Mason Hayes & Curran can prepare submissions to the Law Reform Commission which reflect the individual needs and concerns of clients. The public affairs team's familiarity with the statute book will be of particular benefit to clients in this regard.

If you would like Mason Hayes & Curran to formulate a submission to the Law Reform Commission as part of the consultation process, please contact Dr Brian Hunt. Alternatively, if you merely wish to indicate your preferred areas for restatement for inclusion in Mason Hayes & Curran's own submission, please indicate this to us on your email.  In these circumstances, your comments will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
