24 January 2006

The Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources has embarked on a process of consultation regarding the draft Electronic Communications (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.

***CONSULTATION PERIOD NOW CLOSED*** Click here for latest news

As part of the consultation process, the Department has published the Bill in draft form.  In its present form, the Bill addresses four different areas, which include:

  1. Enforcement of regulatory obligations;
  2. Powers for ComReg to investigate overcharging;
  3. Regulation of ".ie" domain name; and
  4. The operation of an emergency call handling service.

Tony Burke, a partner in the Mason Hayes & Curran Technology, Media and Communications Unit is very familiar with the provisions of this Bill and how it will impact our clients.

During the consultation process, Mason Hayes & Curran can prepare submissions to the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources which reflect the individual needs and concerns of clients.  In addition to proposing changes to the Bill in outline terms, our submissions would include draft amendments to the Bill in technical terms.  Our legislative drafting experience and expertise will be of particular benefit to clients in this regard.

If you would like Mason Hayes & Curran to formulate a submission to the Department on the draft Bill, please email either Tony Burke or Jeanne Kelly. Alternatively, if you merely wish to provide comments on the draft Bill for inclusion in Mason Hayes & Curran's own submission on the draft Bill please indicate this to us on your email. Your comments will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

A copy of the draft Bill is attached for your reference and is Oireachtas copyright.
